Quote:SAN JOSE, Calif. - In this era of easy ad skipping with
TiVo-like video recorders, could television viewers one day be forced to watch commercials with a system that prevents channel switching?

Yes, according to Royal Philips Electronics. A patent application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office says researchers of the Netherland-based consumer electronics company have created a technology that could let broadcasters freeze a channel during a commercial, so viewers wouldn't be able to avoid it.

The pending patent, published on March 30, says the feature would be implemented on a program-by-program basis. Devices that could carry the technology would be a television or a set-top-box.

I'm sure there will be a work-around, but man.. talk about making it harder and harder for the regular joes to enjoy TV.
Thats just plain dumb. I'd never buy a product that had that feature in it.

Guess according to that company i don't have the right to watch what i want, when i want.

Fine, but at least they could target ads properly... Nothing like watching a show and getting blasted with ads for feminine hygenie products.... Totally kills my interest in the show and sends me scrambling for the remote.

But what a better way to get the wife to watch NASCAR or Hockey. "Look Hunny, there is a new pad for sale. And while your up......grab me a beer."  ;)
what ever happened to paying for tv/cable to have no commercials? isn't that how it all started :)

...or it was supposed to be
That's bulls***. If it ever got to that, and it was unavoidable... pure movies time + console, cancel the TV portion of my package.

I can flip a page in a newspaper. I bought the newspaper, so I can avoid the advertising in it.

I can change the channel on the car radio whenever I want. I can also throw in a CD or listen to MP3s. I own it, I decide what to do.

Computer - same deal.

Why should TV be any different? Are they mad they screwed the pooch after 15-20 years of VHS home recording and alleged piracy?

Actually, I'd record the whole thing to DVD with auto-chaptering... eat that, forced TV bitches! :D

EDIT - the Slashdot listing says that we, the people who are already paying to watch commercials, might be able to get out of the technology "for a fee" if an amendment is added to the proposed idea.

So we'll pay $5.00 more a month for "commercial-avoidance privileges". Great.
ya thats b.s. it will never work. with cablecard 2,0 spec coming out, it would never fly.

cable card won't stop this technology... I wouldn't be surprised if some manufacturers try it. How many people here know about the v-chip? could end up being one of those things you have, but never notice until it's too late.
I wonder if they would have to make it an option to shut this off. It's on by default but you can turn it off?

I don't think it'll happen if they force you to watch them. Just to clear something up, with this enabled does that mean you can't change the channel when a commercial is locked?

exactly, you ever watch a DVD and notice that you cant fast forward or change chapters durring the FBI Warning screens or cant skip some of the previews? well thats the same thing theyre trying to do here but to regular NTSC broadcast TV. I highly doubt they will change the spec in Canada, maybe in the US of A they will. they cant force consumers to change equiptment they already own just to be able to prevent us from watching commercials, oh btw, the CRTC will be a thing of the past here in Canada. you wait and see. it will have little or NO affect on the future of our delivery of new media content. while the USA is trying to regulate the internet, ohh geesh.

I usually remove those needless titles anyways but I know what you mean. I hate when you have to watch the previews....

not at all, the only thing I would consider a commercial would be an ad for the production company trying to promote their other movies on dvd etc.
Ive seen a couple movies that will have comercials for Viagra, and Honda just off the top of my head. It pissed me off, becuase i hit the skip button and nothing happens!!!

IT HAS BEGUN!!!

I think he means he can do it on his backups of his legit movies that he makes in case the original gets lost or damaged.
