If you are hearing on radio and TV that you should be getting three hours off to vote toady that is only sort of right. If you do not otherwise have 3 hours while the polls are open then they must give you soem or all depending on your hours of work.

In the most common example if you work 9-5 you do not get any time off because the polls are open til 9:30pm (Eastern) and thus you actually have 4-1/2 hours to go on your own time.

Sorry.

THREE CONSECUTIVE HOURS TO VOTE
All employees who are Canadian citizens, 18 years of age or older, are entitled to have three consecutive hours off on election day to vote. Voting hours in the Eastern time zone are from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. If an employee’s hours of work do not allow for three consecutive hours off within this period, the employer must give them sufficient time off to meet the requirement of three consecutive hours.

Therefore, for example, if an employee works from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., it is not necessary for the employer to give them time off, as the employee has more than three hours after work in which to vote. If an employee works from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., the employer must provide some time off, but it is not necessary to grant three hours off during the middle of the day. The Act provides that voting time is to be allowed at the convenience of the employer, so the employer in this case may allow the employee to leave work at 6:30 p.m.

EXCEPTION – TRANSPORTATION EMPLOYEES
The obligation to provide voting time does not apply in relation to employees who are transporting people or goods by land, water or air, when they are employed outside their polling divisions and time off cannot be provided without interfering with the transportation service.

PROHIBITIONS AND ENFORCEMENT
If it is necessary to provide time off, there must be no reduction in the employee’s pay, and they must not be penalized. This also applies to employees paid on a piece-work basis: such employees must be paid for a full day’s work as if they had not been given time off to vote. (Note, however, that if employees take time off other than that provided by the employer, they are not entitled to payment for that time.) Employers who fail to provide time to vote, or who deduct pay from employees who take time off to vote, are liable to a fine of not more than $1,000 or to imprisonment for a term of not more than three months, or to both.

The Act also prohibits employers from interfering with the granting of three consecutive hours to vote – whether by intimidation, undue influence, or other means. Employers who breach this prohibition are liable, on summary conviction, to a fine of not more than $2,000 or to imprisonment for a term of not more than one year, or to both. If conviction is by indictment, the maximum fine and term of imprisonment rise to $5,000 and five years respectively.

We get let out at 4:00pm to go vote.
I work from home.. I can vote/do laundry whenever I please :P
We're done work at 4:30 anyways... so it doesn't matter. Then again, North Bay is a tad smaller than Toronto :P

I can walk to 4-5 different voting stations in 30 minutes or less. Maybe I should bring pizza and make some cash while casting my vote?

What the hell are you people doing out there? I can't remember actually lining up for any election federal, provincial or municipal in the past 20 years; it's always walk in and walk out.

takes about 3 min. tops.
Voted in an advance poll on the 13th, couldn't chance the weather being crappy and depriving me of my right to cast my ballot. Was fairly busy at the advance poll too, makes me curious as to how big the turnout is actually going to be at my polling station today (Both advance and election day polls are being held in the same place)

Dude, I like you and all... but that's a load of BS. Unless there's 2 feet or more of fresh-fallen snow on the ground, I don't want to hear a SINGLE person in the GTA say they can't get out to vote because of the weather.

People were blown up attempting to vote last year in Iraq, women were threatened with violence if they voted differently than their husbands... and we're complaining about the weather?!?!?!?

Some days I don't understand most Canadians at all.
In he entire city of Saskatoon, they have i think 6 polling stations, and when almost nobody went to the advanced polling, its makes for a big line up.

Sask got pwned then, cause we've got more than that by far for ~57,000 people.
I just think of it this way. Dont matter who gets in there all assholes so I rather not vote and not show my support for any one.

NOS,

I can see how my concern might seem petty to you (Hell it is in one sense) but I spent 2.5 weeks in the hospital after my accident in '99. I have no wish, or desire to repeat even a fraction of that on a slip & fall if I can forsee conditions that could cause me to have a slip & fall accident and avoid it, so I took advantage of the service that Elections Canada offered (My knee at this point is one serious twist away from requiring replacement)

You really are an idiot sometimes ADAM. Daniel has a very serious debilatating injury that prevents him from being mobile like the rest of us enjoy. Snow and ice are deadly for him. He took advantage of the good weather and did vote. Who cares if he voted at the advance poll or not.

And who are you to pass judgement against him?

Seeing this thread is a political one, in my Parlimentry voice:

HERE! HERE!

Every vote you give puts more money in the politician's pocket. So if you don't like anyone, don't vote.... don't give them your dollar.
