Transport Canada issues latest recalls
4.30.2009

Ottawa, Ontario - Transport Canada has issued its latest recalls, which may affect some Jaguar, Hyundai and Volvo vehicles.

2004 Jaguar XJ
Vehicles affected: 560

On certain vehicles, the brake pipes to the rear wheels could corrode prematurely, causing brake fluid leakage and extended stopping distances. Dealers will remove and discard the noise, vibration and harshness pad fitted to the undertray. As well, the rear underfloor and rear crossmember brake pipes will be inspected and, if necessary, replaced.

2006, 2007 Hyundai Accent
2007 Hyundai Elantra
2006, 2007 Hyundai Entourage
2007 Hyundai Santa Fe
2006, 2007 Hyundai Sonata
2005, 2006, 2007 Hyundai Tucson
2007, 2008 Hyundai Veracruz
Vehicles affected: 69,761

On certain vehicles, the stop lamp switch may have been incorrectly installed during vehicle assembly, which could prevent proper brake lamp operation. The lights may fail to illuminate when the brakes are on, or cause the brake lamps to remain illuminated when the brake pedal is released. A faulty switch may also affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock on vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions, so that the shifter cannot be shifted out of the Park position. It may also cause the electronic stability control (ESC) light to illuminate, and may not deactivate the cruise control when the brake pedal is depressed. Dealers will replace the stop lamp switch assembly.

2001-2003 Hyundai Elantra
2003 Hyundai Tiburon
Vehicles affected: 45,637

On certain vehicles operated in areas of heavy road salt usage (Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador), road salt can collect in the outboard portion of the front lower control arm, and may result in internal corrosion, leading to thinning of the steel in the lower control arms. In severe cases, the corrosion may progress to the point where the lower control arm’s upper and lower panels become perforated. This could cause a fracture between the ball joint attachment and the forward and rearward pivot attachments to the chassis. Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the front lower control arms. If replacement is not necessary, drainage holes will be added, along with treatment with rustproofing material to arrest the corrosion process.

2001-2003 Hyundai Santa Fe
Vehicles affected: 15,491

On certain vehicles operated in areas of heavy road salt usage (Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador), road salt may cause internal corrosion of the rear trailing arms, which could lead to thinning or perforation of the trailing arm steel. In time, the trailing arms may fracture. Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the rear trailing arms. Should the trailing arms not require replacement, drainage holes will be added, as well as treatment with rustproofing material to arrest the corrosion process.

1999-2004 Hyundai Sonata
2001-2004 Hyundai XG300
2001-2004 Hyundai XG350
Vehicles affected: 34,716

On certain vehicles operated in areas of heavy road salt usage (Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador), road salt can collect in the rear portion of the side members of the subframe, and may result in internal corrosion leading to thinning or perforation of the subframe steel. The corrosion may ultimately lead to separation of the lower control arm at the forward mounting point to the subframe. In most cases, separation would pull the axle out of the transaxle and the vehicle would no longer have drive power to the wheels. In extreme cases, the wheel can also rotate off its axis and make contact with the fender or wheel well. Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the front subframe assembly. Should the subframe not require replacement, drainage holes will be added, as well as treatment with rustproof material to arrest the corrosion process.

2007-2008 Volvo S80
2008 Volvo V70
2008 Volvo XC70
Vehicles affected: 551

On certain vehicles, the diagnostic software in the central electronic module (CEM) may cause a malfunction of the windshield wipers. They may not operate when activated, or in certain cases may active when not switched on. Dealers will install updated CEM software.
