Ford used to own its own fleet of ships on the Great Lakes and here is a pic of one, note the logo on the stack:

Wow I guess it was cheaper for them to buy a ship then use another company to transport cars. but use used past tense so they not have it anymore?

It isn't a car carrier, it carried the raw materials to make them: iron ore, coal, casting sand etc.
