Ford Small Cars Go Global

DEARBORN, Mich. — Ford currently builds versions of its Fiesta minicar at a number of locations around the world — just about everywhere, in fact, except the United States.

That's about to change. The next-generation Fiesta, which is being engineered by Mazda, Ford's Japanese affiliate, is slated to begin production in mid-2008 in Europe, late 2008 in China and early 2009 in India and Brazil. Derivatives will follow, including replacements for the Ka baby car and the Ecosport/Fusion crossover vehicle.

The Fiesta itself will come in both hatchback and notchback variants, depending on customer preferences in the local market. Sister models include the Mazda 2 and Demio.

Ford still hasn't decided where to source it, but a four-door sedan variant of the new Fiesta is slated to go on sale in the U.S. in calendar-year 2010 as a 2011 model. Among the potential production sites are Camacari, Brazil and Nanjing, China, according to Ford suppliers.

The big surprise is that the new subcompact sedan probably won't be called Fiesta. Sources tell IL that Ford will rebadge the car as the Escort in North America.

The current Fiesta sedan is sold as the Ikon in India and Mexico.

What this means to you: Brazil seems like the appropriate place to source a Fiesta.....Escort
Might be a good idea. after all, say the name Aspire or Festiva, which can be confused with Fiesta, and you'll incur memories of cheap, poorly built vehicles. Name it Escort, and I know I think of a reliable, well built vehicle.

However, I still want my World Wide Focus!
If they look anything like the ones across the pond i'm in! .....well if i fit :D
A hatch will fit here in N/A and escort has a pretty good rep. I hope to see it with a Euro Focus.
