ICBC releases B.C.'s top ten crash locations

Vancouver, British Columbia - The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) has released its annual list of the top ten crash locations in B.C., along with the top ten crash locations for more than 60 communities across the province. By highlighting the locations, ICBC hopes to draw attention to the larger issues of high-risk driving behaviour and how driver behaviour affects the cost of insurance.
ICBC says there is a strong link between certain high-risk driving behaviours and crashes; excessive speed, failing to yield, improper passing, and running red lights or stop signs caused 45 per cent of fatal crashes on British Columbia roads in 2005. The top ten locations are determined by the number of crashes, injuries and fatalities at the intersection in 2006. The full lists are available at ICBC.com.
"The provincial government and ICBC are committed to improving road safety across the province," says John Les, Solicitor General and Minister responsible for public safety. "Last year, ICBC invested $48 million to help reduce crashes. As we continue to invest in road safety through education campaigns, enhanced enforcement and engineering, motorists are encouraged to do their part by driving safely."
ICBC and police will be focusing on high-risk driving behaviours through education and enforcement campaigns this summer, with an added focus on preventing crashes at intersections, and drinking and driving. Enforcement will be supported by Air One, the Lower Mainland's traffic safety helicopter.
The top ten crash locations in B.C. in 2006 in order were:
the Trans-Canada Highway and Willingdon Ave. in Burnaby (352 incidents);
Knight St and SE Marine Drive in Vancouver (304);
Knight Street Bridge in Richmond (257);
Brunette Ave. and Trans-Canada Highway in Coquitlam (222);
Lions Gate Bridge in West Vancouver (217);
Alex Fraser Bridge in Delta (203);
152nd St and Trans-Canada Highway in Surrey (201);
Gaglardi Way and Trans-Canada Highway in Burnaby (196);
88th Ave. and King George Highway in Surrey (185);
Pattullo Bridge in Surrey (177).
