BCE Inc., Canada's largest communications company, said late Wednesday it entered talks to possibly combine with rival Telus Corp.

The companies signed a nonexclusive nondisclosure and standstill agreement.

Earlier this month BCE (nyse: BCE - news - people ) said it had started talks with an investor group that includes Teachers' Private Capital, the private investment arm of the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, and Providence Equity Partners Inc. about possibly taking the company private.

In late May, BCE said it was in talks to sell the company to Cerberus Capital Management LP and a group of Canadian investors.

The company continues to review its strategic alternatives, which it expects to complete in the third quarter.

BCE has a market cap of about $29.45 billion, while Telus, of Vancouver, British Columbia, has a market cap of about $20.31 billion.
