North Vancouver man jailed for odometer tampering

North Vancouver, British Columbia - A North Vancouver man has been handed a three-month jail sentence and fines totaling $23,000 on criminal charges related to odometer tampering, counseling sales tax evasion, and selling vehicles without a valid motor dealer license.

Ramin Karamali had been charged following a joint investigation by the Motor Dealer Council of British Columbia, ICBC and the RCMP. Karamali, who has used several names, was operating as a so-called "curber", an unlicensed person unlawfully engaged in the business of selling cars to the public.

The investigation began in the fall of 2004 and ultimately involved the study of 35 vehicles. Evidence demonstrated that Karamali routinely rolled back odometers an average of 100,000 km per car, and forged documents to reduce the sales tax payable on transactions.

Lame... how do you even know if someone has rolled back the odom?

On alot of older cars, you can't tell...........

But in all honestly, 100,000 kms of mileage will result in alot of wear and tear on the vehicle.

Example, if the car has say 30,000 kms on it but looks older then s*** inside, hmmmmmmmm... things like that.

Pedal wear is another indicator.

These curbsiders can detail all they want, but they can't replace the worn rubber on the gas pedal (unless the replace the pedal.)

Yeah there is always signs of 'weathered' cars...... the rubber pedal is a good one....
