Islanders less likely to buckle up: study

Fewer than two thirds of rural Islanders use seat belts, well under the national average, according to a Transport Canada study.
In rural areas across Canada, 86.9 per cent of people buckle up, but the rate is only 65.8 in rural P.E.I., the lowest of any province.
Urban Islanders tend to safer habits, with 86.9 per cent in seat belts, but that's still below the urban Canada average of 91.1 per cent.
RCMP in the province are frustrated by what they see as deaths that could have been prevented by the use of seatbelts. Of the 14 road fatalities on the Island this year, half of the victims were not wearing seatbelts.
The rural portion of the Transport Canada survey was conducted in November 2004, and the urban portion in November 2005. Transport Canada has set a goal of 95 per cent seat belt use nationally by 2010.
