Zarqawi killed in Iraq air raid

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki has announced that militant leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi has been killed.
"Today we have managed to put an end to Zarqawi," Mr Maliki said, sparking sustained applause.

The Jordanian-born leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq was considered the figurehead of the Sunni insurgency. Reports say he was killed in an air raid near Baquba.

Al-Qaeda in Iraq has been blamed for scores of bombings that have killed hundreds of Shias and US forces.

The head of US-led forces in Iraq, General George Casey, said Zarqawi's body was identified through fingerprints and facial recognition.

Zarqawi has also been accused of leading the rash of kidnappings and beheadings of foreign workers.

Unconfirmed reports suggested he was seen on one video posted on the internet personally cutting off the head of one hostage.

Mr Maliki said intelligence from Iraqi people had helped track down Zarqawi, who had a $25m price on his head.

"What happened today is a result of co-operation for which we have been asking from our masses and the citizens of our country," he said.

The prime minister urged Iraqis to join politcal dialogue rather than violence, vowing to "carry on on the same path... by killing all the terrorists".

The BBC's Ian Pannell in Baghdad says this will be seen as a major victory for the new Iraqi government and US forces but it remains to be seen what effect, if any, it has on the ongoing violence and death rate in the country.

problem, as we Canadians have seen, is that there are people stupid enough to fight for a cause they don't even know anything about... THere will be more to take his place.

I have no sympathy for those who blow up their own countrymen, nevermind outsiders. Terrorists are just above pedophiles and kiddie porn makers in my books. Hell, even lawyers rank higher. Actually terrorists rank the same as pedophiles, except for the fact that they don't discriminate and bring suffering to everyone - not just children.

Yeah for some reason I don't think these nutjobs have the same mentality as those aliens in the fifth element where you kill the leader, and they pack it up and go home.

That is the same thing I was thinking. This war will never end, it'll keep going on and on regardless of who kills who. If anything, this will prevoke more turmoil over there.

I was thinking about this on the way to work, they were talking about it on the radio. You just wait to see how bad it's going to get, we haven't seen anything yet and now with this 'attempted' plot here in Canada, don't be the least bit shocked when something happens here.

I totally agree here, and I think 99.999999% of this country does as well.

See what is happening in your own backyard before playing in someone else's sandbox.

One thing I was kinda 'wondering' was if you drop two 500 pound bombs on a house, regardless of what it's made of and completely 'level' it as they said in the news, why is he still recognizable and not 'pulp'????

I bet bush knew where he was for months... He was just waiting for more terror bulls*** to happen elsewhere in the world..
