Hey chaps,

I am doing a small research on metrication issues and would like your input. Assuming that Canadian schools have all gone metric a long time ago, I want to ask you about domestic unofficial units of measurements - units that you use in a comfort of your own home
  1. Short distance? [metres or feet]<>
  2. Long distance? [km or miles]<>
  3. Temperature? [Celcius or Farenheit]<>
  4. Volume? [Litres or Gallons/Pints/Qt]<>
  5. Mass? [kg/grammes or pounds/oz]<>
  6. Land area? [ha or acres]<>
[st]What I am asking is rather in what units you think. I am particularly interested in people who were born in Canada and studied in schools after they all had gone metric.

    Cheers!
Partially Metric for me...

A (feet), B (km), C (celcius), D (litres), E (kg), F (acres)

Does that help?

1. Short distance? [metres or feet] - feet
2. Long distance? [km or miles] - km
3. Temperature? [Celcius or Farenheit] - celcius/farenheit (depends who I talk to, I can do the conversions fairly accurately in my head)
4. Volume? [Litres or Gallons/Pints/Qt] - (Litres for gas, pints for beer*)
5. Mass? [kg/grammes or pounds/oz] - lbs (grams for cocaine**)
6. Land area? [ha or acres] - acres

** kidding about the cocaine... *not about the beer.
Short distance? [feet]
Long distance? [miles]
Temperature? [Farenheit for water and cooking, Celcius for everything else]
Volume? [Litres]
Mass? [pounds]
Land area? [acres]

Come to think of it I use miles but mean Km. I just got so used to hearing miles an hour etc.. as a kid, and the temperature thing always bugged me when someone tells you how warm the pool is... I guess old habbits are hard to break?
Short distance? [feet]
Long distance? [km]
Temperature? [Celcius]
Volume? [Litres]
Mass? [pounds]
Land area? [ha] - Because I work for Dept of Highways, we do land purchasing in hectares.....
[*]Short distance? [metres or feet] Feet at home and work
[*]Long distance? [km or miles] km at home, nautical miles for work
[*]Temperature? [Celcius or Farenheit], Celcius at home and for work
[*]Volume? [Litres or Gallons/Pints/Qt] litres at home and metric tonnes at work
[*]Mass? [kg/grammes or pounds/oz] both at home and at work
[*]Land area? [ha or acres] I live downtown and only measure area in ft^2, whats an acre or ha? ;)

FYI we went metric in 1973 if i remember right
From the early 1970s until 1985, the federal government operated the Metric Commission. This commission was created to plan, coordinate and implement metric conversion programs in Canada, with the help of Canadian consumers and representatives from diverse industries and sectors of the economy. When the Metric Commission ended its work in 1985, significant progress had been made to introduce metric into all aspects of life in Canada. While the seeds were planted over those fifteen years, all Canadians have since been responsible for nourishing the use of metric in Canada.

Short distance? [feet]
Long distance? [km]
Temperature? [Celcius]
Volume? [Litres]
Mass? [pounds]
Land area? [acres

[*]Short distance? [metres or feet] both, usually feet up to 5, then switch to metres
[*]Long distance? [km or miles] km
[*]Temperature? [Celcius or Farenheit] both usually C
[*]Volume? [Litres or Gallons/Pints/Qt] Litres
[*]Mass? [kg/grammes or pounds/oz] pounds/ not even ever a mention of kg or grammes
[*]Land area? [ha or acres] acres
Short distance? [Feet]
Long distance? [km's]
Temperature? [Celcius]
Volume? [Litres]
Mass? [kg/grammes]
Land area? [acres]

Short distance? both, depends more on if it's more then 5 feet to me.
Long distance? km/ph in Canada, and Miles when I'm State side and I do actually do the conversion in my head when I need too.
Temperature? Celcius all the time, Farenheit when using the Oven
Volume? Litres only, unless it's for milk
Mass? kilo's
Land area? acres
I'm totally screwed -- not only was I in school during the change over -- I'm in the automotive industry where half the equipment is imperial based and the other half is metric. And then throw in the flying on the side that deals with litres, US gallons, nautical miles and knots.

Short distance? feet
Long distance? km (or nm)
Temperature? Celcius (flying) and Farenheit for everything else
Volume? Gallons/Pints/Qt
Mass? pounds/oz
Land area? acres
Partial (I was already a teen when Canada converted, so all my early schooling was Imperial)

[*]Short distance? [feet / inches]
[*]Long distance? [km]
[*]Temperature? [Celcius - but comfortable talking F]
[*]Volume? [Litres] - BUT, in terms of fuel economy I still use MPG
[*]Mass? [kg for shipping - pounds for personal weight]
[*]Land area? [acres] - still can't picture wtf a hectare is
1 hectare = 2.471044 acres

1 square kilometer, about 2.5 acres. That's the only way I can picture it.
