Tranny Issues (95 Escort) - hardk0re - 01-11-2007

I've got some serious issues with my Escort, 1.9L 5spd tranny. Clutch seems good, Its got tons of grip. Only issue is I can't get it into gear. I can force it into gear, all gears are sort of like trying to force it in without the clutch.... but once its in it grips good. If I press the clutch when its in, the engine free-revs...not the clutch...

Any ideas before I take it in?

Sounds like the same type of problem I had with my Thunderbird.
I had to have the tranny rebuilt. I believe it was the clutch plates that failed.

There is a place in Courtice, Mike's Transmission. I went there with my 95 Escort ( auto ) after having AAMCO look at it. It was leaking fluid. AAMCO said $1500.00 to fix. Mike's cost me $100.00

Where to start...

Bent shift linkage. Worn shift linkage bushings. Worn throw-out bearing. Dying clutch slave cylinder. Does the shifter have play or ride low?

My bet is the shift linkage has come loose/bent/bushings worn.

Shifter linkage diagram

I had to replace the slave cylinder on my '92 GT. I know many people have replaced the bushings on the shift arm as well. Also replacing the stabilizer bar bushing is a common thing.

Have you tried http://www.feoa.net ? They are somewhat child-like, but there is some good info. Also try http://www.clubprotege.com , since the car is a first gen BG chassis Mazda Protege. Chances are somebody out there has seen you exact problem before.

Well it was actually real easy, the clutch pedal required adjustment. It was not fully disengaging the clutch..... simple fix.

That's too bad, I'm sure the Chevy would have been easier to fix. ;)

Well not that it would have been, but the '84 never had an issue in 2 years I had it... by far the car with the least problems i've ever owned.

s***... Shoulda thought of that. I had a jackass mechanic thinking he could free up the slave cylinder on mine by standing on the clutch... He bent the pedal! I had to adjust it too...
