New job! and in need of safety harness
#1
Probably more for the tradesman here than the car guys, but dunno where to go. Other than you guys, I don't have all that many contacts in the GTA.

Anywho, I finally got a new job, and they're shipping me off to Nova Scotia & New Brunswick for a 4 month project. Ruins summer & fall for the most part, but have to jump at anything I can get. Plus dealing with sad wifey since I'll only be back every few weeks.

Just went over my "must have" tool list, and well, I need a safety harness & lanyard. I have no idea where to get one at a fair price. For kicks, I looked at home depot & rona, but I'm afraid of putting my life up against a $60-100 harness. (yeah, great, and i'm not a real big fan of heights, but I can deal with it). Need something that will be good, but not break the bank.

I have all this week off minus Friday to hunt around, so maybe I'll just make some calls. I can't find any safety type places nearby.

Leaving on the 26th too, so I really can't do any sort of mail-order until I get it 2-3 day or something.

Any ideas? Sparky maybe?

one job I had a few years ago when I was running fibre optical and telecommunications cables required me to wear safety harness. My work actually provided me with those no charge.

you need to carry a cert. in your wallet and be trained in the use of wearing said device. IF M.O.L ask for your harness ticket and you can't produce then Wam' O they will fine u

Sorry, man; I can't even if I wanted to. At Ford our harnesses are serial numbered and tracked -- to get a new one you have to turn the old one in -- not to mention that "A" if something were to happen to you and the ministry tracked the number it would eventually get back to me and I'd get fired for theft and "B" if you were to remove the number you could get fined by the ministry.

You can go here:

I've dealt with them for hearing protection but they sell harnesses too. I think they start at $90 for a decent one.

If I could give you some advice, is

(1) make sure that you buy the same manufacturer harness and lanyard -- they're made to work together and there are cases where different manufacturers, because of differing design, that the lanyard and harness can actually SEPARATE(!) (called twist-out). They are designed as a SET so don't cheap out that way.

(2) if you are doing a lot of basket/picker work and you can afford it get a retractable lanyard; it's worth the money not to get yanked in the back when you forget you're tied off and run out of slack on a solid lanyard.

Good luck.

Any Nedco branch will have harnesses and lanyards.
http://www.nedco.ca/Ontario/home/Params/CultureCode/en
There's a branch at Denison/Woodbine, Front street downtown, Mississauga head office to off the top of my head. If the branch doesn't have it in stock, they'll get it next day or drop ship it to your site (if your on one right now).

Plus they have branches across Canada if you need anything else or warranty claim.

Are you able to write off the equipment on your taxes as tools? I would think so, and would try.

Thanks guys! I'll start looking around and see what I can find.

Have the certs too.. have quite a few of them. Last thing I need is to get nailed with a stupid fine. Just hope I can remember all of everything!

To add a bit more info on sparky's suggestion. Get a shock absorbing lanyard (or one integrated with the harness). As well if you can, get a self-retracting lifeline (also known as a Sala Block). The good ones are made by Miller or Capital Safety (aka DBI Sala).

Also as Sparky said I do fiber optic runs and some electrical cabling at nuke plants here and there....and for us as well to get new harness we have to return the old one or we have to feel out paper work and get it signed by site manager that the item is lost. PITA.

Good luck with your new job. I spend quit some time away from home....today I arrived to the site and I'll be here for 5 straight weeks with only Saturdays off. I recomend to find yourself a good after work bar.

Thanks for all the help guys. Went out yesterday and picked up my gear.

Now to see about the good after-work bar when I get to wherever I'm going.

It's my understand, which could be totally wrong, that the employer HAS to proved the safety harness and lanyard. And if you were to wear your own equipment, you would not be covered. My employer was told they have to provide us with retractable lanyards, because if you take the length of our lanyards, the shift in the harness, the stretch in the lanyard deploying, etc... it's useless at 16'. Also be careful how you wear it, as guys have had their testicles pop out of the skin if not adjusted correctly. ...sometimes falling to your death doesn't sound so bad!

For the last year have been building a $24+ million dollar sewage treatment facility. Getting $15 something / hour.
