An 80-year-old woman died in hospital after the car she was a passenger in collided with a TTC bus Friday morning.
The crash happened on Bergamot Ave., near Islington Ave. and Rexdale Blvd. Police say the motorist, a 70-year-old male, passed out behind the wheel and slammed into the bus.
"The bus was travelling in (one) direction, (the) car going the opposite direction. We're on a gentle bend here on Bergamot," described Det. Paul Lobsinger of Toronto Police. "The bus driver saw something was wrong. The car wasn't making the turn, the right turn in the road as it bended around."
"The bus driver turned out to the right as best as he could, but the car continued on and slammed into the front corner of the bus."
The driver remains in critical condition with severe chest injuries. Police say he wasn't wearing a seat belt.
A third occupant in the car, an 82-year-old woman, suffered two broken legs, broken ribs and a punctured lungs, but is expected to survive.
