Keyless Entry?
#1
Ok so the 01 Focus ZX3 that I just picked up did not come with any remote's. Now my question is if I pick up a keyless entry fob can I get it programmed or is there a possibility that the focus doesn't have that option? Im a little lost on this subject becasue I thought all foci had the keyless entry option.

Some fleet cars in fact did not come with factory remote (it was a fleet delete option) and so there is a remote possibility (sorry) that yours in fact doesn't have it.

If it does you will need to have the dealer program them for you - not cheap but possible.

If you have fog lights then you should have the ability to have keyless. Just maybe you can try someone else's before buying one. They are pretty easy to program.

step 1 : buy the remotes
step 2 : turn ignition from off to run 4 times within 6 seconds. turn the ignition off, the system will chime to confirm programing mode has been entered, within 20 seconds press any button on the 1st remote, the system will chime to confirm programming, within 20 seconds press any button on 2nd remote, system will chime, turn ignition to run to exit programing mode.

There is an even cheaper option. If you have another Ford product of roughly the same era (within a year or two), try that remote. One remote CAN be used to unlock/lock/etc. more than one vehicle. I use one remote to lock/unlock both the SVT-WGN (Focus wagon 2002) and the 2000 Ford Taurus wagon. Just follow the instructions posted by buzz2.0 or check your own owner's manual.

My manual gives the full instructions on Page 120 (Locks and Security.) If you do not have a manual for your car, click on the following Motorcraft link, select [Owner Guides] and then select your vehicle, year, etc. and download the pdf file. (If you have any difficulty, just send me an email with your car info, and I will forward the appropriate manual.) The instructions in the 2001 Focus manual start on page 73.

You can buy used remotes from most wrecking yards for a few dollars. The only caveat, is all remotes must be programmed at the same time.

Hmmm ... maybe I'm thinking of programming keys, but I thought without any remote at all, it takes a dealer to program remotes - standing by to be corrected.

Edit: just read Buzz's post - looks like I've been corrected LOL.

I will have to try it out. I've got a Ford mechanic that can do it for me but if it needs to be done via the dealer. I think I might just pick up a flip key and try to program that.

Can you program PATS keys too - I'd do it myself but I only have one key to begin with (I have PATS blanks that I cut to the ignition)

if you have 2 programed keys you can program a 3rd, with cycling the ignition and such, i gotta look up how to do it, dont kno off hand. At my dealer to cut and program a key is $53.00 plus taxes.

edit: i myself cant program keys, you have to used our ford lap top, they wont let me touch that....lol

Yeah I knew about if I had 2 keys I could do a third myself, but I only have one - hence I need to see the dealer.

I was just curious if you personally did the key programming too. 53 bucks isn't too bad - I've heard horror stories about it costing more than 100. I've also heard that some locksmiths can do it and some charge as little as $35.

Or if you are friends with the dealer (small town Saskatchewan) then all I paid for was the PAT key. When we built the SVT-WGN, the ignition key fit the locks and steering column. But the SVT ECM (computer) did not recognize the chip, so the car would not start. We were seriously considering changing all the locks and steering column tumbler, etc. to make things work. Then the builder of the other SVT-WGN (also with identical vanity plates, except in California) gave us a tip. Swap the transponder chip inside the key. We did and the car started.

With one key, we went down to our dealer, bought a Fort PAT key, cut it to match and then used their laptop (as described earlier) to obtain our second key (cost was about $50 including the key). The third key we did ourselves using those first two (EBay PAT key cost us $20; instructions are on Page 126 of the owner's manual).

My next little project is to cut one side of a PAT key for the Focus (SVT-WGN) and the other side for the Taurus. It is the ECM that recognizes the PAT key transponder chip, so inserted one way it should start the Focus; inserted the other way it should start the Taurus. I did this many moons ago when we owned a 1981 Ford Escort SS wagon and a 1986 Aerostar van. With a little notch filed into one side of the key (so I could identify which way to insert it in the dark; V for van), it unlocked and worked in both vehicles, and surprisingly the Escort must have had its tumblers on the opposite side of the Aerostar, because the key orientation was exactly the same). Saved carrying two sets of keys. I do know the remotes work on two separate vehicles, and I am pretty sure the PAT key will as well.
