Metal Filings In The Engine Oil
#1
So I took the SVT to get the tranny serviced today, and in doing so they check the engine oil for me. They show me the dipstick, and there is metal shavings/filings on it aswell. Not sure what it could be, car sounds fine, drives the same like the day I picked it up. I don't really beat on it, I do DRIVE it though. I have only hit the rev limiter once maybe twice during the whole break in period of me driving a 6 speed, and I have stalled it a few times forgetting its not an automatic. I know it could be any number of things internally. Any suggestions that could help remedy the situation

Oh boy, re-check the dipstick, then worry. Best of luck.

Change the oil and filter...

Cut the bootom of the filter off and check the element that will tell you the whole story..

^^^ Yep do that with the filter. I would also drop the oilpan and pull the valve cover. Check up there for metal filings, etc too.. The main problem is the metal filings came from somewhere.....finding that something before really bad things happen would be ideal.

I'd drop the pan too, and check in there.

I'll parrot the other guys - drop the filter, dissect it, drop the pan and pull the valve cover. Check the crank area for scores and watch for shavings and oddities near the connecting arm seats on the crank. Anything that resides near or has a bearing, check it if possible. Bearing jackets (housings) that are eating themselves due to wear and possibly poor lubrication / mechanical defects will "shave off". I've done that in the past with an old V8 that I inadvertently starved of oil @ 120 KM/H (crank bearings).

Well I had the whole system flushed from top to bottom, including the dipstick tube. Pulled the valve cover off, looks good, from what I could see. Didn't drop the pan as of yet, going to see how this runs for a week, check the stick and see if there is anything like what was there. As for the oilfilter, I will be cutting that POS tomorrow at wrk. Update you tomorrow

if theres small pieces you wouldn't see them by pulling the valve cover off they would be in the pan that would have been the first thing i checked i couldn't beleive the shavings after my 1st oil change after building the motor it was pretty bad
