you guys gotta admit... the car you pick, how you drive it, and whether you modify all are key factors in how much of a money pit the car becomes
if you went with a yaris, drove like a granny and kept it stock it would be a lot lower cost of ownership than say... a high miles E36 M3 that is tracked and has heavy modifications (tire replacement cost alone would be much higher for the bimmer than the yaris)
another possible approach for people who don't drive many miles is to take advantage of the bmw free maintenance.. for $329/mo you could lease a 328i with full maintenance (even including wear items like wiper blades and brake pads apprently) there would be no out of pocket costs other than the lease, insurance and fuel
