I bought the kids a telescope that (apparently, I haven't tried it yet) I can hook up to my laptop for both navigating the heavens and capturing images ...

and just to date myself ... I can remember as a 5 year old on vacaction in Muskoka my dad and I watching Sputnik go across the skies - it was very bright and moved quite quickly ... it was both impressive and scary being that it was the very first piece of equipment to orbit the earth ... now there are tens of thousands.
