Bell Sympatico Customers Beware
#1
Bell has decided, without notice, to start charging people for high bandwith use on their Sympatico internet service.

I opened my bills yesterday and noticed they charged me an additional 30 bucks for high bandwith usage, which for some reason brought my bill up to 90 bucks for the month. :o

I really hate Bell. They don't follow contractual pricing (mine was supposed to be 34.95/mon for 12 months starting in March 07 for unlimited internet download and upload data)), they can't get rectifications done properly, and they don't notify you upon additional charges.

Just out of curiosity what did you download? I know when you sign up now for internet they do cap you at 100GB/month and charge you for additional. They probably did notify you but just a small one line statement on one of your bills.

Just keep it under 100GB.

the big guys do this, its not just Bell. I was just reading on the local baord about Rogers pulling the same stuff.

gonna have to watch my bill... I've been downloading crap off the Playstation Network like a mofo...

then again I have the ultimate package.

Funny thing is that my buddy has the sympatico fiber service, and he's capped at well below 100GB..

It's funny, cause my AUP says I'm not allowed to go over 50GB/mo or something like that, yet I've breached it for months in a row and all I got was a letter telling me to check my computer for spyware

I'd freak and demand a rebate, or leave. Leaving's always the easy part.

Oh you should check out DSLreports.com if you want to see true horror stories about Bell's billing practices and sleazy tactics by their CSR's to try and get people switched from old unlimited accounts to teh new capped ones.

I'm with them since 1998 so I'm on the 5MB/s unlimited plan, but they've been trying like a mofo to get me onto a new capped plan.

Their last attempt was hilarious, trying to get me on a new plan "and we'll even throw in a new PC for a few dollars more a month" (while gleefully failing to mention the caps that would be imposed)

Watching my account like a hawk, they switch me to a capped plan I'll bolt to another DSL provider w/o caps <_<

I left bell well over a year ago, I still have all their crap they sent me including 2 high speed DSL modems, and they still have not sent me the correct things to return them by mail... when I called them they seem not to care.

I was with bell on their high speed unlimited account from 1999 - 2006.

Mine still says I have unlimited, but also that if I go over it's $1.50/GB max $30.

If it's unlimited I imagine I can't go over. They'd have to state somewhere a limit, which they don't seem to on my account.

The majority of my download/upload is bittorrenting car races that aren't aired here, or are aired better elsewhere (like F1 on ITV, BTCC, V8 Supercars, WRC etc).

I still get anime, but only 3-4 series a season now at best.

Edit: Also, mine is shared between 3 people as well.

I'm still on the old unlimited plan - seems to be working out well for me - they even bumped up my transfer speed without changing my package. They've called me to upgrade to a different account... but then again my download usage is pretty paltry each month.

I've been on the same plan, well, the Ultra Highspeed DSL for quite some time, and they bill it to my Mastercard each month. The amount has been the same every time though...I'm guessing that I'm not downloading enough stuff online to warrant any caps or what have you.

Besides, I can't be bothered with downloading movies, as I preffer to have the real thing playing on my HT...

I'm on Bell Hi-Speed (unlimited) since 2004. I've never been hassled to change my account.

When I login the account page to see my usage, it says I have the unlimited plan (from the good ol days). My bacnwidth varies from 50GB to 120GB a month combined UL/DL. All on torrents.

Mind you it's maxed at 300KB/s D/L for torrents.

I work for my ISP now, the way we have it set up is that if you go over the limit your speed gets throttled down to 2Mbit connection during peak hours. Pretty sneaky to start charging you without making the changes explicit though.

I'm sure they're getting battered by callers complaining about the extra $30 now.

I've never used Bell for my internet, althought I do use my phone line for my DSL access.
I'm with a company based in Montreal that uses/rents Bell's lines I guess and charges me 29.95$/month for unlimeted bandwidth usage.
I've been with them for over 4 years now and never had a problem.
My small program that monitors my bandwidth tells me I've used about 1.8TB since 2 1/2 years!
My speeds are 5Mb/800Kb (530KBs/85KBs).
I love my internet :)

Our ISP is part of the last privet Telecom in Ontario.. possibly North America.

they have two vans and about 10 employees max, we had DSL before most major Canadian City's and it's been the fastest and most stable I've seen... god bless the little guy... oh and no caps :)
