News Release

416-808-1900

On Thursday, July 16, 2009, at 11:34 p.m., an officer was conducting speed enforcement in the Martingrove Road/Steeles Avenue West area.

It is alleged that:

- the officer saw two cars driving at what appeared to be a high rate of speed south on Martingrove Road,

- with a speed measuring device, the officer activated the laser which registered an immediate reading of 200 km/h, in a posted 50 km/h speed limit area.

Both drivers, 20 and 21, were charged with:

1. Racing – Driving at a Rate of Speed – Marked Departure.

A seven-day licence suspension and the impounding of each vehicle for seven days were also imposed on each driver.

Traffic Services reconstructionists were contacted, regarding this speed. Some interesting facts are:

• 200 km/h equals a rate of travel of 55.6 meters per second,
• under ideal conditions, with full braking, it would take a car 209.79 meters to stop, equal to more than two football fields at that rate of speed,
• the time to stop would be 7.5 seconds.

That is a nice section of Martindale, curvy, double lanes and open. Even during rush hour it's pretty deserted. It's easy to do 70-80 without realizing it.
That section of Steeles though is horrible, sewer sink holes, crevices, rutted lanes, terrible stuff.

Man, unless they were driving hopped up to the hills cars, it takes a decent stretch of road to get to the double century mark (200km/h) in a car.

A bike I could have an easier time swallowing...

I think it would be safe to say it doesn't matter at this point. They are both F'd for insurance.

It would be safe to say that both persons will be lucky if they are ever allowed to drive again, or at least 7-10 years...
