For All Former Tempo/topaz Owners..

Well last night the car started to act up, it would surge and pretend it was no power whatsoever under 60kph, i would have to nail it to the floor for it to move. It would only do it after the car warms up and not do it all the time. Once and awhile i could give it any amount of throtle to accelerate, few mins later if the spped goes down below 60 if i give it a little gas it jerks and bocks then when i nail it 1 sec later boom full power and it takes off. The cruises at speed the very best but when it comes to giving throttle under 60 notin there.

I am guessing it the throttle position sensor, anyone else have this trouble before?? Or know what might be causing it.

DPFE... hahaha

I'm also thinking tps.

Is it an auto?

it could be the transmission speed sensor.

Sounds like the Alternator is going. Could also be a run down battery.

Yup it's an auto, never heard of tranny speed sensor's on these relic's.

Alternator and battery are workin great, light ain't on and battery is charging. I also removed the tps sensor connector last night when it was bocking at idle and it smoothen out a little.

Hmm, i'd imagine there would have to be a speed sensor.

If it is the TPS (and from all accounts it most likely is) make sure that you take extreme care with the throttle cable when removing/re-installing the TPS, lesyt you end up with a kinked throttle cable and a near head on collision with a wall! (This actually did happen to me, one of the last straws when it came to my GM dealers garage at the time.)

I would concur with the general assessment of the TPS.

Funny you say that, a '93 Topaz V6 5Speed has 135HP and 150ft/lbs torque and weighs 2588.

A 2001 Focus SE, if you have the 2.0L DOHC, makes 130 horse, 135ft/lbs and weighs 2551lbs. (The SOHC produces only 110HP)

Take twisties out of the equation, on a straightaway you'd get your ass handed to you. Sad, but true.

I had a similar problem. Cept I changed the tps and still had the damn problem would try flooding itself with gas, mine was an 87. hence why I now have the Focus, that topaz was a damn money pit. Sold it to my brother for 100$ and he drove it into a light standard poles with 36hrs of owning the car.

Well here's an update, installed new tps and cleaned iac, no workies still doing it.

What about an oxygen sensor???

It does at both idle and while driving, like it jerks like made trying to figure out what the damn it wants to do then 10 secs later she takes off. Both will do it agauin after. Any ideas boys? Also the check engine light kicks on after it decides what it wants to do and stays on till i turn it off then start it again.

Ah, my mistake, sorry. I was thinking of drivesthebeast's dad's car from the other thread. Not many Topaz threads show up in 2 days without being related.

If you're getting the CEL you can pull the codes. If it's not the TPS, I once had a problem with the MAF sensor, you can pull it out and clean it. Also look at the MAF sensor harness near the plug, they had a problem with those, I once had to splice a new one on (they sell it as a kit actually).

I'd say this too, and also suggest they your check your belts just to make sure they are not worn down......... when my belt went in my 2nd topaz, I had the same issue your talking about, not to mention not be able to turn left.

Ok another update, I goyt a code reader and was getting 2 codes on the KOEO test, maf sensor either to low or to high(mixture) forgot code number and oxygen sensor fault(due to maf out of whack)

then the engine on test i got one code it's number 411 cannot hold rpm during KEEO low rpm test

Any ideas?

Pull the MAF sensor out and clean it, be careful not to break the resistor wires.
If you need pointers on how to do it PM me.
And check the harness like I said for any stretched wires. It was one of the very few probs I had, the dealer sells the pigtail kit, you solder and shrink wrap the new one on.

well i cleaned the maf sensor twice, seems to have gotten better but still there. Cleaned the filter also and going to fine tune and adjust the new TPS to see how it goes then. It also said there could be a leak before or after the maf so i sealed eveything up and made sure everything is tight and going to try it later to see. The oxygen sensor seems to be ok just the maf is triggering it to adjust everything and everything goes haywire. Would a crappy coil or anything set a code, could it be a coil or anything like that?

Just making sure, you pulled the sensor out and not just sprayed inside the body, right?

It might be the pigtail, a tester could tell you for sure.

Well i think i have good news. I had the car out for a drive and no more hesitation what so ever. Ran like a dream. It wouldn't hesitate an any speed no matter what i did, i tried everything to make it hesitate like it did before and just wouldn't. I am pretty happy it is working great now, hoping it stays like this  I sealed up around the filter, the maf adapter and maf and made sure no air could leak anywhere. So i will post again when i get a chance to take it for a nice long drive to see what it does. I had it out for a good 20km's or more and didn't do it. B)
