Ola Amigos!
#21
we made a lot of friends at the resort as well. Raoul, Jaymie (beach bartender), Annie (my mojito supplier), Noel (thanks for the burgers!).. all amazing people... hearing their stories and knowing how these people live, how could you not want to bring all of them back with you... next year, we're packing more crap with us, and spending two weeks.

here's a pick of our friend/bartender Annie. She's currently writing her thesis on the variety of non-tourism related skills that tourism workers in cuba have to assist in their everyday duties...

Many of them say that Canadians are just as friendly as Cubans. I'd hate to ruin that by bringing them to Toronto.

^^^See.. another beautiful Cuban woman.
All the staff said the same thing to us. The Canadians are so nice. The Europeans are rude, they don't tip, and their smokes smell like dogs***
I couldn't agree more!

The friends we made there we also promised we would go back and see them. I would bring more crap with us too. I think I would bring more toiletries. We left all of ours behind with us for the ladies who cleaned our room. It's amazing how many extra bottles of water you could get by leaving a couple of extra pesos on the fridge in the room.

my heart breaks now thinking about it.

after handing out bags of ladies razors, soap and toothpaste to our bartender, my GF asked if there was wanything else she wanted or would prefer..

And it was at that point that Annie thought she wasn't being grateful enough... took a while to explain to her that we just wanted to know if there was anything else we could give her.

Cubans appreciate "EVERYTHING"...

another conversation.

them: "we could use more pantyhose, because they always get runs in them"
Us: "well, you could use clear nail polish to stop runs when they start"
them: "what's clear nail polish?"

Our friends brought inflatable pool toys -- gave them to another bartender for his kids (like he was planning a family trip off the island or something -- oh wait...

when we brought them to the pool, it was the cubans who asked us if we were planning to take a day trip to miami.

almost all of the cars in cuba have tint on them... it's like a national right of passage.

and the pimped out ladas are awesome.

as for the lack of americans.... ask any tourist in Cuba, and that's the most refreshing thing about Cuba.

On our resort the bartender from the Lobby Bar had a pimped out Lada similar to the one pictured but it had fresh orange paint. He would be out there cleaning it all day. He sold us a $100 bottle of Rum for $20 cdn. I think that is how he paid for the car. Very nice guy.
