Cochyn's New Ride...
#1
Poor COCHYN.. he usually posts on here with his travels and adventures... but a quick look over at another site, he recently had an adventure that saw the end of his old car.

If any of you recall, it was one very sweet Gen1 euro focus...

in his words, the story of the fire, and a pic of his new ride..

Quote:So I went out and bought myself an RS  Probably won't be as mad as my Focus was, and its pretty hard to make these cars stand out, but give me time and I'll be on my way to making something special outta this one before going the Escort Cosworth route

Basic story, oil pump died at a pathetic 70mph on the motorway late at night, she threw a rod and **** its guts all over the place. That was fine in a way, I can rebuild that, but the oil caught the turbo and lit up...

Nice big hole going through one end of the bottom end to the other...

New car, picking it up this week

So let's offer our condolensces on the loss of a classic euro performance focus, but the rebirth of another RS....

tho I'm sure for many of us, it'd be hard to feel sorry for someone who had to 'downgrade' to an RS.... lucky bastard!

Jesus  I hope he's okay...

If that had been me in that car I don't think I'd have been able to get out of there without getting a tad "cooked"...

Nice upgrade, shame it happened like that though...

wow atleast u know the header wrap works pretty well, everything was scortched in that fire im guessing insurance covered most of the money for the RS

Oh man! Thats some pretty awful news!

I swear the reason that my eyes are watering is because of the dust in the air.

Such a beautiful piece of craftsmanship, and I'm sorry it that its gone.

I can't wait to see what happens with the new project.

wow..glad everyone was ok.. that fire looked to be very series (passenger compartment all charred up)

going to a focus RS sounds like an upgrade to me.

could this really be caused by oil starvation? whenever i've seen that kind of failure its usually been caused by very bad deto under full boost or overrev ?

anyway.. ya.. modified guys on this board should be a lot more curious to postmortem and find the cause of failure.. i know i was pretty darn curious everytime a WRX motor failed..

if this really was caused by a failed oil pump perhaps guys with an aftermarket turbo should consider an oil pump replacement as a preventative measure?

yeah... oil will seize an engine, spin a bearing, etc.... not sure about punching a hole in the block.

could be that the hole was there first, then the oil light came on, then the engine caught fire, then everyone got the hell out of the flaming focus... gonna keep my eyes on this.

I know there's questions surrounding the SVT's oil pump at high RPMs, but can't say I've heard too many focus pumps going kablooey.

those concerns do exist and any over 7600rpm and there is a chance the oil pump will be damaged, I have the revs set to 7400rpm.

Its good to see thats he ok, and he got a pretty sweet upgrade.

if the oil pump quits, you don't get any lubrication of all those moving parts. Which, if my science is still good, causes FRICTION which causes heat. Metal will melt, break, hot, flammable liquids will catch fire, rubber and plastic will melt and unfortunately, we get one toasted Focus.

Read about this the other day, my lil focus even shed a tear for this one

Sad thing is right after an accident like this one you get the typical vultures floating around to see if there any parts "available" for their one greedy sake.

Woah that's truely a shame about his car... but atleast it went out in a blaze of glory and that he actually drove it for what he built it for!!

Wide body FTW!!! Nice trade up as far as i'm concerned

Hopefully he'll pop by here and let us know what he has in store for his new-to-him RS

what's DP and i were talking about.. based on your description seized motor, spun bearing are totally expected.. but rod punching a hole thru the block seems more related to high rpm/high boost than oil starvation?

EDIT: looking for parts after a car is gone is a great way for owners to recoup some of their $$ because insurance typically doesn't cover aftermarket add ons.
