On A Lighter Note..

ok... a bit of a really bad pun..

but it's been a month since I hopped back on the diet/exercise plan... I'd be lying if I said everything's been going to plan, as working 80 hours a week the past month solid have infringed on my weight training regimen (well, if I want to get a couple of hours of sitting on the couch with my brain and body turned off -- which I find I need time to time)..

anyways... in the beginning of the year, I made a wager with a buddy to see who can lose the most weight by June... doing it as healthily as possible (aim for 2lbs/week).... with $500 on the line and another $25/mo, you'd be damn sure I wasn't going to fall off the wagon this time.

So today was the 1 month weigh-in (I started a week after because I was sitll on vacation)

jan 8 weight - 285.6
feb 1 weight - 266.6

with 19lbs down, I win the 1st month's wager by a single lb. Now the hard part... keeping losses steady (and maintainable) for 4 more months...

so far I feels good :)

how many house do you spend at the gym(per week)?

do you just do cardio(cardio machines, running, dance exercises)?

do you take any nutriotion shackes or anything else(slimfast,multi-vitamins,creatin and ect.)?



for me i spent at least 10 to 12 hours at the gym every week(just 2 hours a day includin dry sauna,hot tub,shower)
less then that and i think that im slacking
also take protain shacke (Muscle Juice, 55g of protain)
i take 2 capsules of creatin 30 mins before my work out, it gives me more revs aka i can prob do 20% more of everything then usually
and i don't forget to take my multi-vitamins everyday (GNC Mega Man)...you need them vitamins, it gives the base to everything(honestly i started feelin much better after a week and half of taking them)
unlike you Steave im going for the muscle gain

Nice work!

That's some serious progress, especially given how busy you've been. I've split to half sports (hockey / ball hockey) and half cardio / weight training for how I spend my time.

I give an hour in the gtm (not quite a full hour of working out yet) at least, and then ball hockey 4 days a week (Mondays are/will be 2 hour events).

Standing calf raises alternated with seated calf raises really blast your calves, man. That's something I learned just last week.

I've been off the fitness wagon of mine for almost a month now...I've been on a tasking to help support people going to Afghanistan, and there hasn't been any time to go to the gym.

When this weekend is over, I'm going to go back to it, and I hope to keep around the same weight and whatnot (200 lbs, 5'6")...get rid of fat with eating properly, but keep adding muscle mass from weight/strength training.

Congrats on the effort so far Steve!

well for me I'm about the same as I was in my last posting but lost 1lb... been noticing I have been getting annoyed with the gym as it's soo freaking busy there lately and hard to stay there for more then 30 minutes because you have to wait for all the machines....
I was the only member on this board with a Yellow Focus Sedan, and a 2002+ Euro Facelift on a sedan.

I only go to the gym when I get off work Nick, and the Kitchener YMCA it's 2 km away from me, plus I can walk the 2 blocks to my gym. oh yeah and umm the YMCA here in Kitchener is a meeting place fro some of the closeted ppl too hook up at for sex as I found out from a few sites I use to chat on.

Not trying to cause an uproar here, but Nic, there is such a thing as overtraining... after which you will stop seeing results and actually, your performance will decrease with time... you just might be pushing that button, especially if you are taking all these powders and vitamins and crap... all that stuff does is make for very expensive urine.... ask any real 'certified' (none of this can fit pro crap) exercise specialist or dietician, and they'll point you in the right direction.

As for DP: Good job dude! Proud of your progress, and you seem to be doing it in a healthy way, which gets a major thumbs up!

As for me... I was pretty sick for a bit, so my oxygen consumption has kinda gone down, and my fitness levels aren't at what they should be right now... but I'm proud to say that overall, I'm down 6% body fat and about 15 lbs from this time last year!

^^you're right my urine is the color of the sun when i take those vitamins....
but i've been told that thats how the body gets rid of the vitamins and minerals that are not being used by the body itself......but i will contact some dietritician just to be sure

Yeah... your body is getting rid of those vitamins and minerals because you DON'T NEED ANYMORE!!! If you eat balanced food choices, you are getting all of the vitamins your body needs, so there is absolutely no need to start supplementing with pills. And even then, if you're lacking a nutrient, it's safer and more effective to get it through your food than through a pill.

Also, this is a warning to you, but you might not know this otherwise. There are two classes of vitamins, water soluble and fat soluble. Water soluble, when you take too many of them, really aren't that problematic to you, because you just pee them out. The fat soluble ones are the major concern, because they accumulate in your fat tissues, and they can cause vitamin toxicity.

Ever heard the phrase " To much of a good thing"... well, that's the case with fat soluble vitamins. If your body isn't processing, they accumulate, and they can eventually lead to major problems.

Honestly, I would really really really recommend that you start watching what you're putting into your body. I've done the supplement thing, I've done the creatine thing (yeah, I know, even though I'm a girl)... in the long run, it's really not good for you.

what about protain shackes?how bad can they be? i know if u just drink them and not working out properly its just gonna go to you're belly...also heard that people might start having leaver problems... i have one right after the work out....which contains 2 (big) scoops with half of a litre of water (on the container it says 55g of protain if this helps)

Protein shakes are pretty controversial. Your body can only use so much protein per day, and if it's getting more than needed, you're right, it will just get stored (like anything else). The general rule is that your body can use approximately 1g of protein per kilogram body weight for the day (take your weight in pounds and divide by 2.2 to get kilos). If each protein serving is giving you 55grams of protein, than that is almost what you need for the entire day! You don't need any more than that. Bigger is not better in this case, even though the stores are trying to sell that to you

Again though, there are better (and better tasting) ways of getting your protein. Try eating a can of tuna instead.

yup.. totally agree with chica... I've tried many things, and honestly, a balanced diet gives you the most energy... protein supplementing is alright for heavy training, but whey can also do a number on your intestines.

I gave myself IBS when I was about your age trying to load up on whey...

I'll still do the occasional protein shake, but probably no more than 2 servings a day max... and that was about this time last year when I saw my strengths increase nearly 40%...

I'll spend maybe 6 hours weightraining a week, and 3-5 hours doing sports I like like biking or volleyball....nothig insanely strenuous.. I try to weight train in the morning, because it doesn't hurt as much as cardio in the morning for me.

Right now, because of my retarded schedule, I may not work out for a week or two.. but the diet will make up for it. I'm not going to kill myself this time to reach a goal.. I'm finding it too easy to just moderate myself.

And your knock at people who have canfit instead of other things... tsk tsk tsk... it matters not whats on the paper. I've met many kin students over my years and most of them have very little real world knowledge about anything.

Some of the best and smartest trainers and coaches I've met out are the ones with less papers but more real world.

I find your generalization pretty pathetic.

In case you didn't know, she, yes she, is studying this sort of thing in University.

So calling her pathetic is a little flame baiting and not something that many would agree with you on. You may have the real world experience but she has both the real world experience and the knowledge to back it up. So, I would do what I do because I don't work out(yet) and I too am in a weight loss program (-52lbs to date with NO HEART ATTACK THANK YOU VERY MUCH), I just sit back and take in all the knowledge I can.
And I am seeing a dietician weekly and we have talked about supplimental vitamins and she told me I don't need them. Just a balanced diet. And that's all i have done to date while eating 2300 calories a day.
TEAM PITA Don't settle for a wannabe, only accept the real deal.

One day I will rule the world. For now, I have to settle for this place.

I think everyone's mileage will vary in that regard. The trick is to find a trainer that's willing to work with you, and your body's peculiarities... one who isn't stuck in their own rut as it were.

There was a personal trainer I knew who made a big deal about how he used to be the team trainer for the argos and other sports clubs. He drove his jag to the gym, and charged an arm and a leg.

This is the same guy who ripped into me for taking all the 45lb plates to do leg presses with (honestly, there wasn't room on the machine to be mixing lesser weights), and then proceeded to lift the 135lbs for his client instead of having the client not use 45lb plates for bench...

The guy was more about looking strong than actually being strong, and his clients never saw improvements.

My advice to anyone is to learn as much as they can, and find a solution that works for them. Having someone with a lot of experience and knowledge on how the body works helps, and I've learned over the years that there's no easy way.. supplements or not.
