Get your fuel filter and air filter replaced first.

Maybe throw in some gas treatment.

Could be a Throttle Position Sensor outta whack.

Clean the MAF sensor.

Any DTC codes come up whatsoever?

Could be EGR, could be DPFE. What mods have been done to the car?

The SPI doesn't have the DPFE sensor that the Zetec has. Check with your dealer for the fuel pump recall.

Check your sparkplugs, sparkplug wires and wires leading into the distributor cap and MAF sensor. Both of those clusters of wires (moreso the dist. cap) have been known to corrode easily and break thanks to blowby from the grille and gap between the grille and hood. Road water/salt gets in there, dries on the wire sheathing and causes corrosion.
