test test 1 2... is this thing on? oh....ok

windows 2000. That is all

I'm thinking if it's even worth it. I upgrade to win 2000 and then it still doesn't work. I've also heard 2000 is even worse than ME..Why does it burn cd's up to 48x but wont's burn a DVD even at 2x with a file of only 18 megs.

ok seriously who ever told you that WIN2K is worse than winME has no clue. WIN2K is quite possibly the best OS Miscrosoft has put out. You can't "upgrade" from ME to 2K because you can't upgrade from ME to anything, You will have to do a fresh install and I can almost guarentee that it will work once you do that. If you do that and it doesn't work than I will publicly admit that meford is cooler than me.

Okay. Now I'm confused. I just put the DVD writer in my brothers machine. it works fine. He has the same system as me with less memory and same OS. So got any Ideas????????????????? Oh he had the DVD set as slave and I had it as master. Maybe I'll try switching things around and run it as slave.

I do have Roxio easy cd/dvd creator 6 installed as well as Nero 6. I heard in the past that they confilict. Idunno. If switching the master/slave doesn't work I'll try reinstalling win ME.

I just upgraded to a dvd burner a few days ago, one from Pioneer. I got it at FutureCrap. All I car is that it records all formats of dvd's and also burns cd-r's and cd-rw's... oh, and it's got a nice black bezel.

It's the DVR-110D Works great so far, and nice and quiet too.

So far i've just been burning in 8x with some FujiFilm DVD+R's (100 pack cd's for 25 bucks at FutureCrap as well).

So far the dicks i'v created work in my xbox... and that's all that matters to me. :)

I dunno, maybe it's a cable select feature on your mobo that's causing a conflict. I'd keep it as the master drive for priority reasons. If cable select isn't the problem, "uninstall" it from your device manager and reboot.

if it was the cable-select thing then it wouldn't work at all and it worked for CD's

try to check the error log from nero and or roxio they might help tell you something.

There is no error log. it locks up instantly after caching.

Wait a sec... you said your DVD drive detects as UDMA2, which is ATA33. You also said your CD drive detects as PIO4.

Disconnect the CD drive, connect the DVD drive to the master (end) position of the cable (if not there already), power up and try that again.

PIO anything and DMA on the same cable ALWAYS causes havoc. Not sure why I didn't see that before.

Let us know if that works.

That was a good idea. Good enough that I took apart my system and reinstalled the DVD alone. No other cd drives. Did not work. I thought you may have had something there. Same problem. Does everything as soon as it finishes caching files it locks the system. Everytime.

I'm returning it.

damn IT...

Thanks for the help Nass and Nos and Euro.

s**t, sorry man.

Since you have time till you can return it... can you check for updated chipset drivers for your motherboard?

If you don't know what board you have, go to http://www.cpuid.com and download CPU-Z. it should be able to tell you your motherboard. Then, head to your manufacturer's website and download the latest drivers. Being an Intel box, you can also grab the drivers off http://www.intel.com for the board methinks. It's probably a 440BX chipset.

Here man, go apeshit!

http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df...port_Intel.aspx

From just cross-referencing their site, in addition to the 440 and 430, there's the 810-820 series chipsets for the P3s under Desktop boards.

It's an asus cu4vx. Same board as my brothers. Same everything. Works in his doesn't in mine.

Edit: The intel chipsetid program couldn't identify my chipset.. Guess it doesn't go that far back.

OK, it's a Via KT133 chipset. One sec, looking for the newest WinME drivers for you.

It's drop-down box-based, but start here and grab the latest 4-in-1 drivers.

http://support.asus.com/download/download....SLanguage=en-us

So you want to select Motherboard --> Socket 370 --> CUV4X.

Then go over to the Drivers page if you want the latest sound driver as well. Once you've installed the 4-in-1 drivers... reboot, give it a go!

I am telling you install windows 2000 and you'll be burning asian porn DVDs non stop. :)

well we can take this furthur by figuring out what it's doing when it starts to cache. Do you have enough hard drive space? Could it be your ram? try swapping the ram from your brothers PC

also you can try to install this:

ftp://ftp.adaptec.com/software_pc/aspi/aspichk.exe

that checks the version and instance of aspi drivers. If you have anythign less than 4.72 go here:

http://download.adaptec.com/software_pc/...i_v472.exe for the generic windows one.

NERO makes their own aswell: ftp://ftp.ahead.de/neroaspien.exe

You can try that to see if that works. Also within Nero you should try to test the drive out see if it hangs. or burn in test mode first.

we'll get you burning or else...

Done all the aspi checks, tried adaptec and nero, no diff. Mem is fine and I have 32 gigs free disk space. It doesn't matter if I try to burn a 12 meg file or 2800 megs. same thing everytime. It writes 700 megs to a cd no problem. even hit 45x on a 24x cd-r. There is something in my system stopping it and I can't find it. I've done all win repairs, disk repair, scan disk, optimize, aspicheck, drive tests, clean boots, reinstalled windows. I give up.

Computer 1 me 0

I'll win in the end.

BTW the drive is in it's box ready to be kicked to the curb. I may have lost the battle but I will win the war.
