What's The Difference
#41
Just picked up that same drive today. They gave me a deal, as the one I wanted showed as being in stock, but they couldn't find any...

Got it all installed, and the first disc I burned was (mostly) a coaster. The last few hundred megs came back with read errors.

Just re-did the burn, but had to kick down the speed to 12x (bought 16x media). Works fine now.

None of this will help you, really.... I bought it to back up my photography in case my HD ever crashes....

well we can take this furthur by figuring out what it's doing when it starts to cache. Do you have enough hard drive space? Could it be your ram? try swapping the ram from your brothers PC

also you can try to install this:

ftp://ftp.adaptec.com/software_pc/aspi/aspichk.exe

that checks the version and instance of aspi drivers. If you have anythign less than 4.72 go here:

http://download.adaptec.com/software_pc/...i_v472.exe for the generic windows one.

NERO makes their own aswell: ftp://ftp.ahead.de/neroaspien.exe

You can try that to see if that works. Also within Nero you should try to test the drive out see if it hangs. or burn in test mode first.

we'll get you burning or else...

Done all the aspi checks, tried adaptec and nero, no diff. Mem is fine and I have 32 gigs free disk space. It doesn't matter if I try to burn a 12 meg file or 2800 megs. same thing everytime. It writes 700 megs to a cd no problem. even hit 45x on a 24x cd-r. There is something in my system stopping it and I can't find it. I've done all win repairs, disk repair, scan disk, optimize, aspicheck, drive tests, clean boots, reinstalled windows. I give up.

Computer 1 me 0

I'll win in the end.

BTW the drive is in it's box ready to be kicked to the curb. I may have lost the battle but I will win the war.

so when you pick up a new drive and if it fails much the same way, then will you get rid of windows ME?!

No because win me is not the problem. I will also not be picking up another drive., this is the 3rd time I've tried one and they all do the same thing. 3 different brands. If win me was the problem then it would write cd's, it also would work in my brothers system with win me.

I am saying your particular install of WinME is messed up somehow hence the reason 3 drives failed to burn DVDs.

I am saying there is nothing wrong with my install of winme, there is something set wrong. Why else would it burn cd's on the drive but not dvd's?

DVDs and CDs are in a totally different world. Burning one does not mean you can burn the other. EIther way since you returned it, that means I don't have to admit meford is cooler than me. :)

I think you have now found the answer to the almighty question.

"What's the difference?"

The difference is that those in the know, No.

And those who don't give a shite fall back on their everlasting love of the beautiful woman and return shite that doesn't work.

Amen

ugh... troubleshooting Windows ME is like trying to figure out what's wrong with your DPFE sensor... you're better to just replace it.

On that note, NOS and the boys have given good advice, and if none of that worked, it's very likely a software problem... but I have to ask...

When you re-installed windows, did you do a complete format and re-install? If not, and you just re-installed over your current installation, chances are good it would have no effect if it's a software issue.

If you and your brother have EXACTLY the same machines, why not see if it's a software issue and take your harddrive next door for a test in his machine. swap his for yours and yours for his, and see if the DVD burner comes up with a harddrive you know is good... but only attempt this if both machines are EXACTLY the same.. don't want to inadvertently bastardize your brother's install.

Another thing.. you mentioned your brother has less memory in his machine? you might want to go and set your windows paging file to a static size. If your brother has less memory, windows is already constantly using the paging file.. it's probably large enough. However, because you have more memory, and you go to burn a DVD, windows wants to cache the information, finds it's just running out of physical RAM, so it turns to the paging file and starts resizing it. That can cause enough delay for the DVD to time out, and die on you, hanging your system. If you set the paging file to a static size (make it 512MB or so), windows won't try resizing it at an inopportune time.

But to summarize:
- Make sure your DVD drive is on it's own IDE channel. Make sure no other drives share the same ribbon cable as it, and even see if it's sharing a power cable... also may want to try using a fresh ribbon cable... they can be finicky and cause grief sometimes.

- use the latest drivers

- Set a static paging file size

- check for spyware

- disable MSN search bar if you have it

- defrag your HDD

- disable antivirus live protection if you have it

- stop all other programs and processes, don't even go on the internet

- burn at 2x or even 1x .. then slowly work up to see if that's the issue

- upgrade to WinXP

optional - swap HDD with your brother and give it a whirl to determine if it's really a software issue.

other than that, I have to see the machine in person to get a proper feel for the issue. .. it may be a good time to upgrade.

From my personal experience, WinME hated static page file sizes. I've only ever trusted that to a Windows NT-based box (2000, XP). My XP box has a static 2GB page file, for example.

I completely zoned on the anti-virus, but I had mentally excused it when he could burn CDs sucessfully.

Also, the only other thing that came to mind is that FAT32 will not address / access files larger than 4GB. When he mentioned DVDs, I considered that option - until he mentioned the working size of the DVD was like 50-100MB at times.

^-- you'd have to be an enterprise infrastructure to ever see a file over 4 GB... or maybe if you've NEVER cleaned out your mail file.

i don't have much experience with Windows ME.. thank god.

Nero images of DVDs... especially data DVDs. Done. No file for you!

Single-layer DVD - 4.7GB of files.

Any "image" file of a single-layer DVD that is packed... 4.7GB.

I create them all the time when transcoding episodes of Charmed for Sara... I write the whole shooting match to a single ISO and then make another "disc". If she wants to watch the DVDs on her comp, I mount the image in Daemon Tools. If she wants it upstairs, then I burn it to DVD-R.

ok... but then you wouldn't even be able to download/create the image file in the 1st place...never mind hanging on burning. ..
